Luke Letchford's photographs are superb and serve as a warning of how much is at risk in the Anthropocene era if we fail to reduce the impact of climate change and pollution. The photographs work best when they explore natural and human interaction - a lone surfer catching a wave on Byron Bay in Australia; a fishing vessel off the coast of Ngawi New Zealand competing for a catch with a pod of dolphins at its bow; a jogger with a dog running through shallow water on a pristine Gold Coast beach in Queensland as the drone picks out lines in the sand that are reminiscent of Nazca geoglyphs in Southern Peru. Letchford's surfaces shimmer with saturated colour and iridescent light. His photographs have the same impact as colour field paintings and draw the viewer into different landscapes: from the spring tundra of North-East Canada where an inquisitive polar bear meets our gaze to the biodiversity hotspot of Hawaii where a Turneresque landscape of clouds forms a celestial circle around the setting sun. All these photographs beautifully capture their subjects and are stark reminders of the fragility of ecosystems which will not survive the depredation and degradation caused by mass tourism, global warming, consumerism and pollution.
